About the event
Class will be held via Zoom w/ a potential in-person dance studio option. Location TBD.
This J-Sette/Majorette-style dance began in the late 1960s at historically black colleges and universities, or HBCUs. It combines the energy of the high-step marching style of black college bands with West African, jazz, modern, and hip-hop choreography. This class is for you to imagine dancing with an invisible baton and leading your own band for a halftime show. Making an entrance with a strut to warm up as you showcase moves that are sharp and explosive with a southern twist. Class begins with a warm-up that is designed to improve musicality, flexibility, strengthen the core, improve stamina, and get acquainted with Marching Band music. The second part of the class starts with a brief history and context of the dances (that will inform your execution of the movements) and continues with an extensive breakdown of choreography. Then, you'll practice what you've learned in strut and stand routine.
