LAVI MIYÃ’ | ON RESISTANCE & REVOLUTION

Created by Veroneque Ignace, Kriyol Dance! artistic director, Lavi Miyò is a collaborative dance, music, and visual arts project that employs storytelling and Haitian traditional music, dance, and oral history. The argument at its foundation is the claim that consuming the overarching and highly romanticized notions of resistance with regards to black peoples, and especially people of Haitian descent, disregards the day-to-day traumas that individuals experience. The project centers the creation of work on the terms resilience, resistance, power, and empowerment and their implications on physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

This choreographic work was first presented as a work-in-progress, in 2016, through Haiti Cultural Exchange. The event featured Williams College alum, students, and community members: Veroneque Ignace, Laurel O'Connor, Naomi Fields, Olivier Joseph,  Len'l Russell, and Marla Robertson. The show was held at Five Myles Gallery, Friday January 29th 6-9pm and moderated, afterward, by Jessica St. Vil and Shalomisrael Diggs of KaNu Dance Theater. Read about it here.

KDC'S FULL LENGTH PRESENTATION OF "LAVI MIYÒ" OCCURRED JUNE 21-JUNE 22, 2018

The event included a visual arts exhibition of paintings

by Nathalie Jolivert, Brooklyn based Haitian artist and designer. Her featured artwork chronicles conversations of wellness, Vodou, and urbanism in Downtown, Port-au-Prince. This work has a particular focus on how Lakou St. Michel Archange, a 140-year old Vodou community, provides tools to remain strong both to the community in downtown Port-au-Prince and to its diaspora.

This full length performance was made possible by the continued support and participation of Kriyol Dance! artists, Nathalie Jolivert, Sirene Dantor of Fanmi Asòtò, Five Myles Gallery, Crossing Midnight Entertainment, and Lakou Societe St. Michel Archange, and others.

A special thank you to Citizens Committee for New York City for selecting
